When Jim Rogen and Ann Noland moved to Walker, Minn. in 1996, they immediately saw the need for more assisted-living housing for mentally ill patients in the area. Jim had over 20 years of psychiatric experience in the Twin Cities, and Ann had a successful career as an RN with the bulk of her experience in psychology. The couple opened two assisted living locations but in 2004, responding to the growing need in the community, set their sights on creating a new type of facility, one that would provide a homelike atmosphere for seniors with persistent mental illness.
The name of the new facility is Stille Havn Hus, which means “Calm Harbor House” in Norwegian, which is a perfect description of the 23-acre site composed of gently rolling hills and woods. The middle of the property is cleared for the four four-bedroom group homes fanning out from a common activity building, leaving a substantial natural border around the perimeter. In keeping with the beautiful natural surroundings, the houses are decorated in an up-north style and are complemented by two ponds with a connecting creek.
The primary focus of the facility has been on providing its residents with quality of life in a safe and secure environment. Residents have responded well to the mission of Stille Havn Hus and the venture
has created 33 jobs since the project was first funded.
Due in large part to the undisputable success of the SBA 504-financed Still Havn Hus, Jim and Ann have embarked on another SBA 504 project, this time for an assisted-living facility requiring $1.8 million in financing. May Creek Cottages will be a 20-unit 12,500-square-foot residence built on six acres of wooded land also in Walker. The ranch-style cottage
